What is my Email address? mail.fruitfly.org currently accepts Emails for following domains:
fruitfly.org
bdgp.org
bdgp.lbl.gov
dhgp.org
berkeleybop.org
berkeley-bop.org
Use any of those domains with your address (e.g. suzi@berkeleybop.org). The
address is usually set in the Email client.
For legacy reasons, fruitfly.berkeley.edu and fruitfly.bdgp.berkeley.edu are
also supported. Do not use this address any more; it may not work at some point
in the future.
What settings do I need for my Email client?
mail.fruitfly.org is best used as an IMAP server. With IMAP all mail will
remain stored on the server and all Email can be accessed from
multiple IMAP clients (including Webmail). IMAP Email can be organized
into folders on the server similar to local disks.Additonally, all Email
stored
on the server is backed up every night to tapes. Receiving Email via the
older POP protocol
is also possible but POP usually downloads all Email to the local computer
and doesn't allow folders.
To set up your Email client for IMAP, use following settings:
Account type
IMAP
Incoming mail server
mail.fruitfly.org
Outgoing mail server (SMTP)
mail.fruitfly.org
Outside of LBNL, using SSL for incoming Email is required! Check
for an option "Use secure connections", "Use SSL" or similar. Sometimes
this option is found under Expert or Advanced settings. The mail program
should switch to port 993 for IMAP access (sometimes the port is not shown).
To send mail from outside LBNL or UC Berkeley Rubin Lab using mail.fruitfly.org,
SMTP authentication is required. Check the outgoing server or SMTP settings
for authentication fields. Use your usual username and password for Email
access to authenticate. If possible, use secure connections.
I cannot send Email from outside LBNL with mail.fruitfly.org. Outside LBNL SMTP authentication is required. See the settings section.
An increasing number of internet service providers (ISP) are cutting off port
25 that is used for SMTP access (Hijacked Windows PC's are often used
to send out spam. Cutting off port 25 prevents those PC's from acting as spam-bots).
Use the SMTP server given by your ISP to send Email. If your settings have
your fruitfly.org Email address as sender, Emails will still appear as if they
come from mail.fruitfly.org. At some future point, mail.fruitfly.org may accept
authenticated SMTP over port 587 as well. Port 587 is usually not blocked by
the ISPs.
Security?
mail.fruitfly.org supports secure connections with an official certificate
from Equifax for every available service. If possible, use secure connections.
For Email accesss
outside
LBNL only
secure connections will be accepted.
For webmail, use https://mail.fruitfly.org (note the "s" in https). iCal
also supports secure connections.
Somebody just sent me an Email and it hasn't arrived yet.
mail.fruitfly.org uses a anti-spam method called "Greylisting". If it has
never seen an Email sender before, it responds with an temporary failure
for a pre-set time period (currently 120 seconds). Legitimate Email servers
will attempt sending the mail again and again (usually for 5 days). Spam
servers usually will just give up and move to the next address. If the
Email has been greylisted, it will arrive anywhere from 120 seconds to
a hour (depending on the server setup of the sender). Once a greylisted
Email has been accepted, the server and the address will be accepted right
away for future Emails.
Alternatively, the sender server or mail.fruitfly.org may have a very large
queue of mails that are processed first in, first out.
How do I change my password?
Go to webmail and log on using your username and password.
There are several menu items at the top of the page. Select "Options".
One of the options is "Change password". Select the option, enter
your old password and the new one. The new password has to be entered twice.
My folders are not visible in webmail. How can I make them visible?
In webmail select the menu item "Folders". At the bottom part of
the page, folders will be shown with a button
"Subscribe" below them (There is also a space with the text "Nothing
to unsubscribe" or a list of folders with an "Unsubscribe button".
Ignore that one for now). Select folders you want to see in webmail (or
all of them) with
Shift/Ctrl-click
and click
the
"Subscribe"
button.
The
updated
page will show all the subscribed folders in the list above the "Unsubscribe"
button. To make them visible in the folder list on the left, refresh the
page in the browser or log off and on again. Mail folders can be removed
from the left side list with the "Unsubscribe" button. Unsubscribing
folders doesn't delete them.
When I send messages via webmail, my address doesn't show up correctly.
Squirrelmail needs to know your personal information to create a correct
"From:" field. From the menu items at the top of the page, select "Options".
go to "Personal Information" and fill in at least the "Full Name:" and
"Email Address:". You can use your preferred domain (see first question)
for the Email address.
What are server side Email filters?
Server side filters will filter the message after arriving at the server
before it gets delivered to the mailbox. With server side filters, messages
can be tagged, discarded, rejected or filed into mail folders if they match
one or several criteria (such as sender, subject or size) independent on
the Email server. For example, potential spam can get sorted into a spam
mailbox.
How do I set server side Email filters?
Go to the webmail interface and log on using your username and password. Select
the menu item "Filter" and follow the instructions.
How do I set the vacation message?
The vacation message is just a server side filter. One of the available filters
is a vacation message. Set the Condition to "All" (ignore the other condition
fields), click on the checkbox "Vacation" and modify the vacation message
if desired. The
vacation
message
will be sent once to each sender.
If the person sends
repeated
messages,
he
will
not
receive
another vacation message until a interval that can be set from the filter
interface. To cancel the vacation message, delete that particular filter.
How do I delete the vacation message?
See previous answer.
Help with the webmail interface.
Go to Squirrelmail for more information.
I received a quota warning. What shall I do?
Usually it's easiest to request a quota increase. When using the Apple OS
X Mail.app, deleted messages get filed in the "trash" folder and not deleted
automatically. This may fill up the quota even though the mailboxes appear
empty. Make sure to empty the trashcan.
How do I publish an iCal calendar?
In iCal, go to the menu "Calendar" and select the menu item "Publish...".
Following dialog will appear:
Enter the "Base URL:" exactly as shown. Enter a reasonable unique description
in the field for "Publish calendar as:"; this description will be used as unique
identifier on the server. Do not use the default "Home"! Login
and Password are your Email login and password. Select the appropriate options
and click on the Publish button.
How do I subscribe to a mailing list?
Go to the mailing list manager for a list of available mailing lists. Select
the desired mailing list and follow the instructions.
How do I unsubscribe from a mailing list?
Go to the mailing list manager, select the list and follow the instructions
on that page.
How do I view the mailing list archives?
For most mailing lists you will have to be subscribed to view the list archives.
The mailman list manager software doesn't support masquerading Email addresses
and limiting access to subscribers only will prevent spammers from harvesting
the addresses. For the same reason, lists of subscribers are available
to subscribers only. Archives can be accessed from the mailing list manager.
Select the appropriate list and follow the archives link.
